Library Guides: Adding Library Resources to MyCanvas: Welcome

Overview

The Library provides access to many course-related Journal, eBook and Video Databases. Most of the resources contained in these databases are not freely available on the Internet. This guide provides instructions on how to add these resources to MyCanvas through either creating a link to a resource or embedding the resource directly into a MyCanvas course page.

Things to note:

The steps for obtaining stable URLs (Permalinks) to use in MyCanvas will vary depending on the database and if you are on or off-campus.
If you are off-campus, you will need to sign in with your Mohawk ID and password in order to access database content.
Database content is copyright-cleared. You do not need to contact the publisher to use it.
Many databases offer alternate formats (e.g. students can listen to articles) so linking to them can help students with different learning styles.
It is best practice to provide a full citation when linking to online material that takes a student outside of MyCanvas. Not only it is a requirement of our Copyright Policy, but if links break, students can find the material another way.

Adding Links to MyCanvas

Copy the resource's appropriate link from the database (e.g. EBSCOhost, Films on Demand, etc.).
Go to the linking information for the resource within this guide and format the link as instructed.
Access the Module where you wish to add the link.
Using the module's + icon, access the drop down menu next to Add and choose External URL.
Paste the link into the URL field.
Add a Page Name; this is student facing.
Click the Add Item button to save your work.

Complete the linking process to add a link to a module

Copy the resource's appropriate link from the database (e.g. EBSCOhost, Films on Demand, etc.).
Access the Page where you wish to insert your link and go to edit mode.
Place your cursor where you wish to insert or highlight the text that will link to the resource.
Click on the link | chain icon on the toolbar and choose "External Link".
Paste the link in the "Link" field. The "Text" field will already display your chosen, highlighted text or you can add your own title here.
Click "Done".
