What is a Permalink?

Permalinks are stable URLs that allow Mohawk students, staff, and faculty to access content in the Library's licensed Databases when they are off-campus. These Permalinks contain something called a Proxy which prompts users to login with their Mohawk ID and password to ensure that they are affiliated with Mohawk College.

Some Library Databases provide Permalinks that are automatically proxied while others do not. Here are some tips to help you recognize the difference between a proxied URL and an un-proxied URL.

A proxied URL will contain the phrase ezproxy.mohawkcollege.ca within the link. For example:

An un-proxied link will not contain this phrase. For example:

  • https://login?url=https://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?&AN=3339007&site=ehost-live&scope=site

When a URL includes the proxy information, you do not need to do anything else. Just copy and paste the URL where needed. Note that links in Ebscohost databases do not contain the proxy prefix but you can still use them "as is". They have been built with the proxy built in.

When  a URL does not include the proxy information, you can proxy it manually by adding this prefix: https://ezproxy.mohawkcollege.ca/login?url= to the beginning of the URL. For example:

  • https://ezproxy.mohawkcollege.ca/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/mohawk-ebooks/detail.action?docID=5674786

Or, you can use the EZproxy Permalink Generator to create a link.
