Information You Need

To write a citation for an online article you will need the following pieces of information:

  • Author(s)
  • Publication date (this could be the year, or the year and month)
  • Article title
  • Journal or Magazine title (this is italicized)
  • Volume number (this is italicized)
  • Issue number
  • Page numbers
  • DOI (an assigned alphanumeric sequence given to a journal article to help identify it).

    Not every work has a DOI. Please connect with your instructor about using a url link to content found on a library database and what is acceptable for the assignment.



Anatomy of an article citation

In callouts: Author, Date, Title, Pub info. Citation example

Journals - One Author

Author's Last Name, First Initial. Second Initial if Given. (Year of Publication). Title of article: Subtitle if any. Name of Journal, Volume Number(Issue Number), first page number-last page number. https://doi number
