Web Browsers: Respondus Lockdown Browser

What is Respondus LockDown Browser?

Respondus LockDown Browser (Respondus) is a custom web browser that “locks down” a device while taking a quiz in MyCanvas. While using Respondus, students will not be able to copy, print, or open any other software.

Installing Respondus LockDown Browser

If an instructor has required you to use Respondus when taking a quiz, you must download and install it before you can take the quiz.  Once installed, it will be available for all future quizzes. 

The link to download Respondus Lockdown Browser is available when you access the quiz that requires it. Select Download Respondus Lockdown Browser.

Respondus Required

You will be brought to the Respondus LockDown Browser download page. Click on the ‘Install Now’ button to begin.

Installing Respondus

Once the download has completed, locate the download file and double-click the file to begin the setup process. Follow the instructions to install LockDown Browser. When complete, a Respondus LockDown Browser icon will appear on the desktop.

Note: Respondus is not available on Chromebooks. 

Memory Requirements

  • Windows: 75 MB available, permanent space
  • Mac: 120 MB available, permanent space

Browser Requirements
The Respondus Lockdown Browser is an application based on Chromium, Google's open source framework. Google Chrome is not needed to run Respondus, and  once downloaded, Respondus will not affect Google Chrome.

Accessing Respondus LockDown Browser

To take a quiz that requires the use of Respondus LockDown Browser:

  1. Make sure Respondus has been downloaded 
  2. Launch Respondus so the software is open
  3. Log into MyCanvas using a regular browser
  4. Go to Quizzes and Select the quiz that requires LockDown Browser
  5. Select ‘Launch LockDown Browser
  6. You might be asked to shut down some of your open applications.

Remember: you will not be able to exit LockDown Browser and resume work in a browser of your choice until you have successfully submitted a completed quiz.

Exiting Respondus Lockdown Browser Early

If a user experiences an issue with Respondus Lockdown Browser freezing or giving them a white screen while taking a test, they can exit out of the program and relaunch it by completing the following steps:

  1. Click the Red X button in the top right hand corner of the Respondus Lockdown Browser.
  2. A pop up prompt will appear – click the “Close the browser” button.
  3. You will be asked to provide a reason for exiting in a text box pop up. Enter your reason (e. g., browser froze) and click the “ Submit and close the browser ” button.
  4. Return to MyCanvas and relaunch the quiz in question using the “Launch Lockdown Browser” button .
