Virtual Private Network (VPN): Overview

Use this guide to follow the steps for installing Global Protect, the VPN client for Mohawk STUDENTS.  Only install this client on personal laptops, not Mohawk owned laptops. The guide is best viewed on a computer browser, not a mobile device.

What is a VPN?

Virtual Private Networks, or VPNs, once connected, make your device look like it is on a College controlled network. A VPN is useful for accessing applications or software that can only be accessed on site due to licensing requirements.

You do not need a VPN to access most Mohawk applications and services.

Why do I need a VPN to access some software?

Some software has restrictions that could be any of the below and are often combined in many cases:

  • College controlled network
  • Active Student
  • Geography
  • College owned device
  • A device joined to our college domain

What do I need a VPN for?

Only for applications and software with one or more of the above restrictions. Examples include:

  • Some applications on MohawkAPPS
  • Various network licenses
  • Various software licenses

What don’t I need a VPN for?

Anything that does not have one of the restrictions listed earlier. Examples include:

  • MyMohawk
  • E-mail
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Office 365
  • All Cloud Software Solutions (SaaS)

Global Connect

Global Protect is the system used by students to connect to the Virtual Private Network (VPN) at Mohawk College. A VPN provides an encrypted connection between your off-campus computer and the campus network.


  • Free desktop client for Windows and Mac 
  • Secure connection to the campus network from off-campus
  • Remote access to some campus servers
