ePortfolio: Sway: Add Content to Your Sway

Working with Cards

You can add new content cards by accessing the Add Content button, which looks like a big “+” sign at the bottom of a Card. Clicking the Add Content button will show the the options to add specific types of Cards, such as a Header Card, Text Card, Image Card, Video Card, or Layout cards, called Groups.

Add content button.

Heading Cards

Add a heading card to start a new section in your sway. The heading card will be the title for that section. You can add text, images, and video to each section. Add a heading card by accessing the Add Content button.

Image Cards

Add images from your computer or OneDrive. Sway can also search the Web for the copyright cleared images.

From the Add Content button, under Suggested or Media, choose Image. From here, you can search (top right corner), or click Suggested to select a source for your images. You can select one or multiple images, and select Add to insert them into the selected box in your Sway.  You can also drag and drop anywhere in your Sway.

When adding your own images - pictures, certificates, awards, etc, - ensure that they are images, not PDFs. Images will have one of the following file formats: .jpeg, .png or .gif.

Select insert from the top left corner and search for images in Sway to use, or add your own from OneDrive or your computer.

Once you have added your image, it is good practice to add alternative text (or alt text for short) to the image. To do so, click on the image and then click on Details.

Details buggon on the top left of image

In the details screen, you can add a caption to the image. It will display below your image. To make your Sway accessible, you should add alternative text (alt text). Be descriptive with the alt text as it is used by screen readers to describe the image to visually impaired readers. How would you describe your image to someone?

Grouping Images

When you add multiple images in Sway, you can group them together. Watch the following video for instructions on how to do this.

Sway Accessibility Features

Sway content tends to be highly visual, and people who are blind or have low vision can understand it more easily if you create your Sway with accessibility in mind.

Use best practices to make your Sway accessible including:

  • sufficient contrast for text and colours
  • built-in heading tags in a logical order
  • default text styles (don't use italics, underline or all caps)
  • good descriptions for hyperlink text (links to web pages)
  • alternative text for all visuals (add alt text for all images)

For more information on accessibility features follow Microsoft's guidelines, linked below.

Text Cards

Add a text card to any section of your Sway by using the Add Content button.  You can type directly into the text card, or you can copy and paste your text from another document.

Video Cards

To add videos to your Sway, from the Add Content button select Media, and then choose Video.

Add content button with the different options for media: image, video, audio, embed, and upload.

Videos can be added from your computer, or OneDrive. Sway can also search the Web for the copyright cleared videos.

Select insert from the top left corner and search for videos in Sway to use, or add your own from OneDrive or your computer.
