MyCanvas: Course Participation

Participation in MyCanvas includes reviewing course materials in Modules, completing quizzes and assignments, as well as participating in Discussions. Use these resources to learn more about Course Navigation and some of the other features built in to MyCanvas.

Course Navigation

Courses can be accessed from the Dashboard or from the Courses option in the Global Navigation menu. Each of your courses has a Course Navigation Menu that may include different options available to you. Here are some of the menu options you may find in your Course Navigation Menu.

course navigation menu

  1. Home - you can always return to the course home page by clicking the "Home" link.
  2. Syllabus - a list of assignments taken directly from the Assignments section. Some required work may not be listed, and future assignments may change. Because of this, it's important not to use this link to keep track of your work.
  3. Announcements - see messages posted by your instructor.
  4. Modules - takes you to the overall course structure.
  5. People - shows a list of the students and instructor(s) participating in the course.
  6. Assignments - shows all assignments and due dates for the course.
  7. Discussions -  a shared area where students and teachers can post. You may have assignments that include posting to a discussion. Keep in mind that posts to discussions are seen by the entire class. For private messages, use Conversations.
  8. Quizzes - lists all course quizzes. Only certain quizzes may be available at any given time, so it's best to use the modules and lesson links to access quizzes.
  9. Grades - see individual assignment and quiz grades from the current course only.

Course: Modules

Your instructor will use modules to organize the content in pages. If you see a lock symbol, beside a module, and the text is grayed out, it means you are restricted from accessing this module until you have completed required course work.

A green check mark beside each topic (page in the module), indicates that you have viewed the content.

Discussions

Discussions are public discussions with the instructor and all students in the course. You can adjust how you receive notifications for new messages in discussions via account notification settings in the global navigation menu. In some cases discussions may not be used in a course.

Instructors and students can upload images into their discussion post using the rich content editor toolbar.
